Sea to Sky
Sea to Sky in Baja
My newest tour is a full street ride of Northern Baja California, with the goal of staying at a couple beachfront resorts as well as a Lodge that sits at around 2500’ but is nestled at the base of San Pedro Martir, Bajas tallest mountain range. We will start our second day on the beaches of the pacific ocean and then make our trek up to the top of this mountain. Up at higher elevation you will get to enjoy lot’s of ponderosas, as well as some epic views of the pacific coast. There is also a observatory that sits right about the top of the mountain, this location was picked from only 6 others in the world. As the high elevation and no light pollution made it the perfect destination. In this area the milky way is totally visible to us and makes for one amazing night by an open fire. We will also enjoy some other great locations like Catavina that is right smack in the middle of the peninsula and surrounded by massive boulders all around this area.

day 1
On Sunday we will meet in San Ysidro, its right on the border and there are a few spots to exchange USD to Pesos. We will then cross into Tijuana and stop to get our FMM which is a tourist permit. This is free for 7 days but takes some time filling out a form. After getting this done we will head through Tijuana and onto Highway 1D, the Toll road that takes us to Ensenada. We will only ride for an hour before reaching out hotel for the night. We will grab dinner with a beautiful sunset and get some good sleep for the next day.

day 2
After an early morning breakfast, we will head down towards Ensenada via Highway 1D, a few short stops at a couple Toll Booths and we make it into downtown Ensenada. Our goal is to get to be a little tourists via choosing to stop in Ensenada or heading to the outskirts and stopping at La Bufadora. One of a few Pacific blow holes, and tourist trap! But a fun experience. We will keep on riding south towards San Vicente, i know a great Taco Shop that would be a great lunch spot for us. We then have a 100KM ride up to the top of the mountain, but this ride is very fun! It starts out pretty flat and straight, but then suddenly it starts to climb with a bunch of twists along the way. This section is to be rode at your comfort zone, but once at the top, the views are magical! Hopefully we will get to see a few California Condors flying around. Night destination is 30 miles back down the mountain at one amazing Cattle Ranch with a great home cooked meal. The skies are great here so expect me to get a fire going and some beers to talk about our experiences.

Day 3
Another beautiful morning with hot coffee and a home cooked meal, places like Rancho Meling are few and far apart. So we need to enjoy them while they last as i feel they are great places to visit and relax. We have a pretty short day that is all highway, so we will take a late departure down the mountain and back to Highway 1. We will stop for fuel in El Rosario and grab one of the most epic lunches in Baja. Mama Espinoza’s Lobster burritos!! They are expensive, but so good, if you like fresh lobster.. The remaining 75 miles are super fun, and climbs back up to around 2600 feet. The changes in scenery in this area are wild, and our nights lodging is the only stop on Highway 1 from El Rosario to Guerrero Negro, almost 200 miles.

day 4
The halfway point of our trip is by far my most favorite location in all of Baja California! Bahia de Los Angeles is one of the most beautiful bay town i have ever been to. It is surrounded by massive islands, mountains, and desert. It’s everything you want for a secluded stay. I hope to be able to stay at the only beach front resort, so please BOOK your spot as soon as possible. Today will be a very short day, so that we can relax and enjoy the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez

day 5
After a magical sunrise and a great breakfast, it’s time to head back north and towards home. We take the same road we came in back to Highway 1, turn north and towards Lake Chapala and Highway 5 intersection. We then continue on north along the sea of Cortez coast to the small but lively town of San Felipe. Here we will be welcome with sunshine and warm(er) waters, we stay right on the beach and are just a short walk to the Malecon where the towns livens up and the music starts to play. Another beautiful day in Baja!

Day 6
Our final night in Baja is at the famous and prestigious Horsepower Ranch! A beautiful racers lodge nestled in the canyons just outside of Ensenada. Here the margaritas are some of the best we’ve had, and are quite strong so be careful! But to get here we must ride Highway 3 across the central mountain range and through the Cheese valley of Ojos Negros. This highway is particularly popular with all the off roaders as it connect some of the best off road riding in the area. You’ll see the famous Mikes Sky Ranch entrance as we ride through. The last 20 or so miles are some of the best riding of the trip!

day 7
It’s time to head towards the border and home! Hopefully it’s been a wonderful trip and I’m excited to get everyone down to Baja when I feel it’s offers the best climate. We will take the bypass road around Ensenada and towards Valle de Guadalupe and ending in Tecate a short 75 miles. Getting there early allows everyone to head home that Saturday and hopefully in time to celebrate Mother’s Day!
